Describes equipment, methodology, and procedures used in tests of a water cannon system used for diverting small iceberg masses at sea. The system tested consisted of a single water cannon mounted on the bow of a vessel, with a motion compensation system and hydraulic control unit to enable continuous and consistent impacts of a water jet upon an ice mass to be deflected. The test program involved 54 push tests on icebergs ranging from 36 to 100, 000 tonnes in size. Other tests were also conducted including vessel positioning tests next to icebergs, engine/pump tests with a range of nozzle diameters to maximize the reaction force created by the water jet, iceberg destruction tests, vessel motion tests, and motion compensation evaluation tests.
